I work in IT so all I really need is a computer and an internet connection, which means I'm not tied to any one place and can actually pick somewhere with a better climate. The work also needs a certain amount of peace and quiet though so that's a factor too. Been thinking about buying property in Dubai and making the move. What would you say is worth looking at over there?

Best thing is to stay close to where everything is. Shops, entertainment, gyms nearby, which for someone in IT is pretty important since you're sitting at a desk all day. That kind of setup is pretty much only in the areas of Dubai where all the high-rise buildings are. So I'd be looking at apartments.

You're not going to get real quiet living downtown in all those high-rises, soundproofing or not. And for everything you'd need infrastructure-wise, you can just set up your own gym at a villa, most of them have a pool or are close to the water anyway. If you want to go out somewhere you just call a taxi, Dubai isn't that spread out. But you get to live and work in complete peace and quiet.
